For the third year in a row, Roark Smith won Disc Jockey of the Year, and KPFT won Best Radio Station at the Academy of Texas Music Texas Music Awards.

As host of Wide Open Spaces, heard weekday mornings, Roark Smith is KPFT’s most popular DJ. His mix of rock, blues, folk, singer-songwriter and world selections, as well as his interviews and in-studio guest performers, has won over many listeners.

At the awards ceremony, Smith told the audience that he’d once been advised that radio wasn’t about the music, and how he was grateful he had not heeded such ideas.

“Roark is KPFT to so many because he brings that warmth and commitment to local and regional music that people naturally associate with the radio station,” Program Director Ernesto Aguilar explains. “He plays music that defies commercial radio, and his taste is one of a kind.”

Smith remarked to the Chronicle that he was happy to spin music for listeners outside of the preset playlists of commercial radio.
